A new trend for spring breakers is sticking with the sun, but adding...snow. The Minnesota vacations getaway doesn't have to be for the entire week. Economic constraints and rising fuel costs make trips on a tankful the getaway du jour. Spring breakers team up and share fuel costs to savor an outdoors adventure in the upper Midwest. It can be a group of gals, guys, couples or a family.
Pack your winter sports gear if you have it, if you don't there are plenty of rental facilities that will help you gear up. There is nothing more excilerating than a romp in the snow and the vistas of snow white landscapes in clean fresh air help us forget the stresses of school and work. If you've never been on a real winter vacation get ready to be surprised, most people return again and again enjoying the crisp outdoors and true upnorth experience.
These won't be featured on MTV anytime soon, but using Minneapolis/Saint Paul as the hub, here are a couple suggestions for Alternative Spring Breaks. Lutsen, Minnesota: Head north to the international port of Duluth on Lake Superior, and make your first stop at Spirit Mountain to ride the new Timber Twister., an eye-bulging treetop ride on elevated rails down the mountain in a coaster car. Continue up the North Shore past State Parks with frozen waterfalls that offer dramatic photo opportunities. Check in to Eagle Ridge Resort, with ski in and ski out lodgings on Moose Mountain. Papa Charlie's books top name entertainment, and the charming town of Grand Marais makes for a great side trip.
Brainerd/Baxter, Minnesota Book a water park hotel suite to get close to the shopping action in Baxter and Nisswa. There are some unique shops and boutiques, plus excellent restaurants throughout the area. Christmas Point is easily worth a half day, with 25,000+ square feet of retail on three levels. Rest your feet and sate your palette with lunch in the coffee bar. A side trip to Crosby, the Antique Capital of the Lakes Area, is worthwhile. With over ten antique shops lining the streets of Crosby and Atkin Minnesota. And spa services can be obtained at several nearby resorts, alpine ski at Ski Gull or Nordic ski on the groomed 100+ mile Paul Bunyan Trail. If snowmobiling is your interest there are 100's of miles of groomed trails including the lighted trail on gull Lake. There are a variety of lodgings available in the Brainerd/Baxter area, some with restaurants on site.
