There's really a ton of fun stuff to do in San Francisco. Even if you've seen all the city's major attractions time and time again, there are plenty of ways you can still have a good time and discover something new. Maybe you need to find something totally different to do, or maybe you just need to look at old activities in a new way. Either way, here's some of the fun stuff to do in San Francisco right now:
Visit the Beat Museum and City Lights Bookstore
This is a great place to take teens who are getting into those anti-authority years. The Beat movement was all about standing up to authority, and it all started here. Begin at the Beat Museum, where you can learn about the Beat culture and the major figures of that culture. Take a step back in time as you find real artifacts from the Beat era, including original poetry and prose by Beatniks. One of the best thing about the museum is, surprisingly, its museum shop, where you can find all sorts of Beat related paraphernalia.
While the Beat Museum certainly isn't world class, it does offer an interesting look at one of the major movements in San Franciscan - and American, for that matter, culture. It can be a great way for your kids to come into contact with the great figures of this time.
Once you get done at the Beat Museum, though, you definitely need to head to the real birthplace of it all, the City Lights Bookstore. Those interested in poetry should consider attending one of the readings here, which are really interesting events. At the City Lights Bookstore, you can find classic works of Beatniks shelved alongside contemporary works from small time presses and hippie authors of all sorts. It's definitely an interesting place to find some reading material if you're looking for a new world view!
Check Out Film Night in the Park
Film Night in the Park takes place all throughout the San Francisco summers, and films are offered in San Anselmo, Fairfax, Mill Valley, San Geronimo, and San Francisco. These film nights can be fun for the entire family. Take a blanket and a picnic basket full of snacks, and enjoy all sorts of different shows. In the summer of 2010, for example, shows like 16 Candles, Avatar, Up, Amelie, Mamma Mia, and even Napoleon Dynamite were shown.
Each summer, the showings change and the schedule changes, so it's definitely a good idea to check up beforehand. From classics like Notorious to brand new movies like Sherlock Holmes, Film Night in the Park has just about everything you could want. Film Night in the Park has been around for twenty years, and it makes for a fantastic family outing. Plus, some showing raise money for local charities, which means you can be helping out your town all while enjoying your favorite movie in a quiet, warm park on a summer evening.
